Post-natal genetic diagnosis

Published on 22 January 2025

The Agence de la biomédecine collects and analyzes consolidated data on post-natal genetic examinations carried out in France. These data are published each year in a dedicated Medical and Scientific Report, providing a detailed analysis of laboratory activity, the characteristics of the examinations carried out and their distribution across France.

Consolidated data on post-natal genetic diagnosis

Post-natal genetic testing involves the analysis of genetic characteristics inherited or acquired at an early stage of prenatal development. The agency's medical and scientific report compiles data on post-natal genetic examinations prescribed in France and carried out by cytogenetic and molecular genetic laboratories. These data include :

  • laboratory activity: number of laboratories reporting activity, geographical distribution and changes in activity over the years;
  • genetic tests performed: proportion of tests by geographic origin of prescribers and number of people having benefited from this type of genetic diagnosis;
  • specific data by activity: cytogenetic tests, chromosomal abnormalities by molecular analysis and molecular genetic tests.

This information enables us to gain a better understanding of medical practices, assess patients' needs and support professionals in harmonizing declarations by means of common guidelines. The report is thus an essential tool for monitoring developments in post-natal genetic diagnosis in France.
