Prenatal diagnosis

Published on 22 January 2025

Consolidated data for prenatal diagnosis activities in France are presented each year in the Agence de la biomédecine's dedicated medical and scientific report. This information is used to monitor medical practices and support professionals in the development of care and techniques.

Consolidated data on prenatal diagnosis

The medical and scientific report compiles data from prenatal diagnosis activities, which include examinations to identify anomalies or diseases in the embryo or fetus. These data cover :

  • the number of examinations carried out, by type of test (serum marker assays, aneuploidy testing by analysis of free DNA circulating in maternal blood, cytogenetics, molecular genetics and fetal biochemistry) ;
  • medical indications leading to diagnosis;
  • the results obtained;
  • geographical distribution of activities, including origin of prescribers and access to analyses.

These data are collected either individually or in aggregate form, depending on the type of analysis. Data quality is systematically checked by the agency, in collaboration with the laboratories concerned. This analysis contributes to a better understanding of practices and results, essential for guiding professionals, researchers and decision-makers.
