Players and resources

Published on 23 April 2025

Every day, a large number of people work to support couples and unmarried women wishing to have a child by means of medically assisted procreation. They also work to promote gamete donation, essential to the success of many parental projects. This page lists the main players involved, as well as the resources available to inform and support donors and patients throughout the process.

Donation centers and healthcare facilities

Gamete donation and medically assisted procreation are carried out in centers authorized by Regional Health Agencies, on the advice of the Agence de la biomédecine, by practitioners qualified for these activities. These centers, often located in health establishments, have multidisciplinary teams made up of doctors, biologists, psychologists and other health professionals. They inform, guide and support potential donors throughout the donation process. The teams also provide patients with attentive, personalized follow-up at every stage of the assisted reproduction process.

Learned societies

Several learned societies contribute to improving practices in the field of gamete donation and medically assisted procreation. They support research, professional training and the development of medical recommendations. These institutions, which take part in the Agency's work, promote the sharing of knowledge and innovation to enhance the quality and safety of practices.

Patient and healthcare user associations

Associations play a key role in the field of gamete donation and medically assisted procreation. They speak on behalf of patients and their families, representing them on the Agency's governing bodies, in various working groups and in the preparation of the five-year plan for human reproduction, embryology and genetics. They are involved in awareness-raising campaigns and collaborate with the Agency on communication initiatives.

Institutional partners

Under the authority of the French Ministry of Health, the Agence de la biomédecine works closely with the Regional Health Agencies and the French National Health Insurance to oversee medically assisted procreation and promote gamete donation. The institutional players work together to guarantee an ethical and secure framework that ensures fair access to care, the quality of medical practices and information for donors and patients in France.
