Is it possible to obtain information about the donor? Are the donor anonymous?

Published on 13 January 2025

Gamete donation remains free, voluntary and anonymous.

The third-party donor and the recipients of the donation do not know each other's identity. Recipients of medically assisted procreation with a third-party donor cannot have access to information about the third-party donor, nor can the latter have access to information about persons born from his or her donation.

The Bioethics Act of 2021 provides a right of access to origins only for people born from a donation. When they reach the age of majority and if they so wish, they will be able to access non-identifying data and the identity of the donor by contacting the Commission d'Accès des Personnes nées d'une Assistance médicale à la procréation aux Données des tiers Donneurs (CAPADD). This Commission, which reports to the French Ministry of Health and Prevention, and these data are strictly personal.

No filiation link can be established between the person born from a gamete or embryo donation and the donor. The child's parents remain the woman or couple who wanted the child, who carried out the medically assisted procreation procedure and who saw the child being born. The donor has no responsibility for the child born of his or her donation.
