What is a defect-free sperm?

Published on 23 December 2024

From puberty onwards, spermatozoa are produced continuously in the testicles. They mix with seminal fluid (a biological fluid produced by the male genital glands) to form semen during ejaculation. To analyze sperm quality, a laboratory sample must be collected by masturbation. The number, quality and mobility of spermatozoa can then be observed. An ejaculate can normally contain several dozen to several hundred million spermatozoa. In certain pathological situations, men have very few spermatozoa (oligospermia) or none at all (azoospermia), or spermatozoa with little or no motility (asthenospermia) and/or abnormal shapes (teratospermia). The doctor will give you all the explanations you need to understand the results you have been given.
