There are two methods for harvesting bone marrow from donors:
-
Either blood is collected. This is the most common method (80% of donations). The principle is much the same as for platelet donation. You receive a drug a few days beforehand. It stimulates the production of bone marrow cells and transfers them from the bones into the bloodstream. Don't worry: this product is identical to what the body already makes̀ naturally. On the day, a sample is taken which lasts around 4 hours, followed by a well-deserved gourmet break! A second sampling, the following day, is sometimes necessary.
-
Alternatively, the sample can be taken by puncture from the posterior pelvic bones. This is a simple procedure, performed under general anaesthetic. How does it work? Bone marrow cells are harvested directly from the pelvic bone, along with their surrounding environment. Just the right amount is taken, depending on the donor's weight and that of the patient. No more, no less. For this procedure, you are looked after for 48 hours at the hospital by qualified personnel. Time enough to do everything right, in perfect safety!
