The Agence de la biomédecine manages a number of essential tools for hematopoietic stem cell donation, procurement and transplantation in France. These registries and applications, dedicated to healthcare professionals, guarantee the transparency and efficiency of care paths linked to hematopoietic stem cell donation and transplantation. The Agency also contributes to the development of European and international tools.
Bone marrow donation and transplantation
The national registry of voluntary bone marrow donors, also known as France Greffe de Moelle, is managed by the Agency. It centralizes data on donors registered in France. This registry is an essential tool for rapidly identifying compatible donors for patients awaiting transplants. Syrenad (Système de Recherche National de Donneurs de Moelle Osseuse - National Bone Marrow Donor Search System) is the IT application that makes it possible to use the registry's data, carry out compatibility searches between donors and recipients, and coordinate the various stages of the transplant process. Syrenad is also interconnected with international registries to extend the possibilities of finding a compatible donor abroad.
Cord blood donation and transplantation
The French Placenta Blood Network, coordinated by the agency, groups together authorized cord blood banks across the country, ensuring the collection, conservation and management of placental blood units. These hematopoietic stem cell transplants are used to treat serious blood diseases, particularly when a compatible bone marrow donor is not available. This network guarantees the quality of the grafts and their rapid availability, thus contributing to the success of cord blood transplants.
These Placenta Blood Units (PBUs) are registered in the Eurocord registry, created in 1995 and managed by the Agence de la Biomédecine since 2010. Its mission is to collect, validate and analyze clinical follow-up data on patients transplanted with placental blood, in Europe and beyond. Its main tasks are to record the therapeutic follow-up of hematopoietic stem cell transplants from related or unrelated units, to assess graft efficacy and quality, and to transmit the necessary data to partner banks and registries for accreditation and annual reporting.
Contribution to European and international registers
Agence de la biomédecine hosts the Eurocord registry, which brings together data on transplants performed using cord blood units cryopreserved in storage banks in Europe.
It is also a member of the World Marrow Donor Association (WMDA), whose mission is to facilitate international donor exchanges and promote best practices worldwide. The Agence de la biomédecine's France greffe de Moelle registry has been accredited by the WMDA since 2004.
