Right of access to origins: clarifications and FAQ

Published on 2 June 2025

March 31, 2025 marks the full implementation of the French bioethics law of August 2, 2021, guaranteeing people born of medically assisted procreation (MAP) with a third-party donor the right to access their origins.

From this date, gametes from donors who have not authorized access to their identity and non-identifying data may no longer be used for artificial insemination or in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures.

Embryos resulting from IVF involving a third-party donor and carried out before March 31, 2025 are not affected and may continue to be used. However, their use could limit the exercise of the right of access to origins. MPA centers will inform recipients of the status of these embryos. Before any use, recipients will be asked to sign a document attesting to this information.
