Gamete donation

Published on 23 April 2025

Since the Bioethics Act of 2021, all women have been able to access medically assisted reproduction. However, this access relies on the availability of gametes: sperm donation, and sometimes oocyte donation, is essential to enable women in couples or unmarried women, and certain heterosexual couples, to realize their parental project. Promoting donation is an important mission for the Agence de la biomédecine, which oversees all gamete donation-related activities.

Promoting gamete donation

Every year, thousands of women need gamete donation to access medically assisted reproduction. But the number of donors remains insufficient. To meet this social challenge, the Agence de la biomédecine is designing and deploying innovative systems to encourage men aged 18 to 44 and women aged 18 to 37 to commit to this supportive approach.

Based on survey data, sociological studies and rigorous evaluations, these targeted communication initiatives mobilize all channels - press, social networks, posters, events - to inform, encourage and direct volunteers towards donation centers and healthcare professionals who will support them throughout the process.

Supervising practices to guarantee quality and safety

Gamete donation is a medical act governed by law. The Agence de la biomédecine is involved in drawing up and applying the regulations. It issues opinions on authorizations for the activity of donation centers, issues authorizations for the import and export of gametes, and supports professionals by drawing up recommendations for good practice.

The Agency ensures the monitoring, control and transparency of gamete donation activities. It manages the gamete and embryo donor registry and processes data on donors and their offspring. It also supports medical and scientific research, notably by funding innovative projects.
