The Agence de la biomédecine is a government agency under the supervision of the French Ministry of Health, established in 2004 by the Bioethics Law, which oversees key areas such as the donation and transplantation of organs, tissues and hematopoietic stem cells, assisted reproduction and genetics. It ensures that medical advances in these areas respect ethics and human dignity, while informing and supporting patients, professionals and the general public.
Ethics at the heart of medicine
The Agence de la biomédecine, established in 2004 by the French Bioethics Law, works to ensure that advances in medicine and research are made in a way that respects human dignity. It works in four areas:
- Collection and transplantation of organs and tissues;
- Bone marrow collection and transplantation;
- Medically assisted reproduction;
- Human embryology and genetics.
The agency’s actions are developed within an ethical and secure framework that applies to all patients throughout France.
Acting for life
Backed by recognized medical, scientific and legal expertise, the agency has become a benchmark in its fields of activity: it oversees, regulates and evaluates medical practices to guarantee quality care for all.
Beyond these missions, the agency plays a key role in informing the public: it raises awareness, enlightens and accompanies patients and healthcare professionals on scientific advances, the appropriation of their rights and legislative developments.
The Agency operates under the supervision of the Ministry of Health. Its activities are guided by the objectives and orientations defined by ministerial plans and a contract of objectives and performance. It reports to Parliament on its actions and the application of the law.
